What goes with extension cord
- Space HeaterVerdict: NONo. Plug the space heater directly into a properly functioning wall outlet, not an extension cord, power strip, or surge protector. If the factory cord cannot reach, move the heater or use another suitable outlet. Current CPSC and U.S. Fire Administration guidance warns that this setup can overheat and start a fire.
- Air ConditionerVerdict: NONo for most window and portable air conditioners. Plug the unit directly into a grounded wall outlet. Use an extension cord only if the exact model manual expressly permits one and gives the required cord rating; otherwise, do not use it.
- RefrigeratorVerdict: RISKYUsually, no. Plug the refrigerator directly into a grounded wall outlet on the circuit specified in its manual. If the manual expressly allows temporary extension-cord use, follow its exact requirements for the cord’s listing, grounding type, and electrical rating.
- MicrowaveVerdict: RISKYAvoid using an extension cord unless your microwave’s manual explicitly permits one. Plug the microwave directly into a properly grounded wall outlet and follow the manual’s circuit requirements. Some manufacturers allow a correctly rated grounding cord under specific conditions, while others prohibit extension cords outright.
- TVVerdict: YES, WITH LIMITSYes, if the TV manual does not prohibit it and the extension cord is listed, undamaged, and rated for at least the TV’s electrical load. Keep the cord uncovered, loose, and out of traffic, and use it only as a temporary power route. If the TV will stay there, use a nearby wall outlet or have one installed.
- Laptop ChargerVerdict: YES, WITH LIMITSYes, with limits. Use an undamaged extension cord whose rating covers the laptop charger and every other device connected to it, with the plug fully inserted and any grounding pin intact. Do not use a hot, loose, covered, wet, or daisy-chained cord; follow the laptop manual if it calls for a wall outlet or a manufacturer-supplied extension.
