What goes with power strip
- Desktop ComputerVerdict: YES, WITH LIMITSYes. Use a certified, grounded power strip only when its watt or amp rating can handle the desktop and every other device plugged into it. Plug the strip directly into a wall outlet, never another strip or an extension cord. Choose a surge protector for voltage spikes, or a UPS if you need backup power during an outage.
- Gaming ConsoleVerdict: YES, WITH LIMITSYes, with limits. Use a listed, undamaged power strip whose rating covers the gaming console and every other connected device, and plug the strip directly into a wall outlet. Follow the console manual if it gives stricter power-connection instructions.
- Wi-Fi RouterVerdict: YES, WITH LIMITSYes. Plug the router’s manufacturer-specified power adapter into a safety-certified, undamaged power strip connected directly to a wall outlet. Keep the strip’s combined load within its marked rating, and make sure a bulky adapter fits fully without crowding nearby plugs. A basic power strip does not provide surge protection.
- Laser PrinterVerdict: RISKYAvoid it unless your laser printer’s manual explicitly allows a power strip and the strip is rated for the full connected load. Many manufacturers call for a direct, grounded wall outlet. A laser printer’s power demand can jump when it wakes or starts printing.
- Coffee MakerVerdict: RISKYAvoid it; plug the coffee maker directly into a wall outlet when possible. If temporary strip use is unavoidable, the coffee maker’s manual must not prohibit it, and the strip must be safety-certified and rated for the full connected load. Connect no other heating appliance to that strip. If you cannot verify those conditions, do not use it.
- Electric KettleVerdict: NONo. Plug the electric kettle directly into a properly functioning wall outlet, and do not run another heat-producing appliance from that receptacle while the kettle is heating. A power strip adds cord and contact points that can overheat under a heavy appliance load; surge protection does not increase its electrical capacity.
