Can I Ignore High RPM After a Cold Start?Verdict: YESYes. A higher idle immediately after a cold start is normal on many vehicles. The engine control system may intentionally raise idle speed while the engine is cold, and some vehicles also use elevated idle as part of their emissions and catalyst warm-up strategy. The important part is the pattern: the RPM should come down as the engine warms. Do not use a universal RPM number or timer to judge it. If the idle stays unusually high after the engine is warm, repeatedly surges up and down, triggers a warning light or makes the vehicle behave abnormally, stop treating it as normal cold-start idle.
