- Can I Ignore High RPM After a Cold Start?Verdict: YESYes. A higher idle immediately after a cold start is normal on many vehicles. The engine control system may intentionally raise idle speed while the engine is cold, and some vehicles also use elevated idle as part of their emissions and catalyst warm-up strategy. The important part is the pattern: the RPM should come down as the engine warms. Do not use a universal RPM number or timer to judge it. If the idle stays unusually high after the engine is warm, repeatedly surges up and down, triggers a warning light or makes the vehicle behave abnormally, stop treating it as normal cold-start idle.
- Can I Ignore Water Dripping From My Exhaust?Verdict: YESYes. A small amount of clear water dripping from the tailpipe is usually normal, especially after a cold start, in cool or humid weather or after short trips. Burning fuel produces water vapor, and some of that vapor can condense inside the cooler exhaust system before draining out. If the car runs normally, there is no overheating warning and the coolant level is not falling, ordinary clear condensation does not need a repair. Persistent thick white exhaust, coolant loss, overheating or other abnormal engine symptoms are a different situation and should not be dismissed as condensation.
