What Should I Do Now?

  1. Step 1: Check the pressure

    Find the recommended cold inflation pressure on the tire information placard — usually in the driver’s door jamb, sometimes the glovebox or fuel door — or in the owner’s manual. Do not use the number moulded into the tire sidewall; that is the tire’s maximum, not your vehicle’s recommendation. Check with a gauge when the tires are cold.

  2. Step 2: Add air if needed

    Inflate to the vehicle manufacturer’s figure, not above it, and check all four while you are there. Tires read higher once they have been driven on, so if you have just driven to the pump, expect the reading to be a little high.

  3. Step 3: See if it happens again

    Re-check that tire in a few days. Losing a little pressure over weeks is normal; losing it again within days points to a leak — a puncture, the valve stem, the seal at the rim, or the wheel itself — rather than something to keep topping up.

Why Does Low Tire Pressure Matter?

A tire isn't rigid — it carries the vehicle's weight through the air inside it, at a pressure the manufacturer chose for that job. Below that pressure, the sidewall flexes further on every rotation, and that extra flexing builds heat, which is what actually degrades the rubber and the structure underneath it.

The flex also reshapes the contact patch — the small area of tread actually touching the road — so grip and wear stop matching what the vehicle was tuned for. None of this happens instantly, which is why low pressure is so easy to ignore: it feels close to normal for a while, then the damage shows up all at once.

Does cold weather cause the tire pressure light to come on?

Yes. Air contracts as it cools, so pressure drops with temperature and a cold morning can push a borderline tire below the warning threshold — the warning is still accurate at that moment. Check pressure cold and inflate to the vehicle’s figure. If the light keeps returning once it warms up, that points to a leak rather than temperature.

Why does the same tire keep losing air?

Something is letting air out — a puncture, a leaking valve stem, a poor seal at the rim, or a damaged wheel. Topping it up repeatedly hides the symptom without fixing it. NHTSA recommends having a tire that won’t hold pressure inspected by a professional.

Should I use the PSI printed on the tire?

No. The number moulded into the sidewall is the tire’s maximum cold inflation pressure, not the pressure your vehicle is designed to run. Use the figure on the tire information placard — usually the driver’s door jamb, sometimes the glovebox or fuel door — or in the owner’s manual.

Will the TPMS light go away after adding air?

Usually, once pressure is back above the threshold — sometimes immediately, sometimes after driving a short distance so the system can re-read.
