Why Does Water Come Out of a Car Exhaust?
Water is a normal product of fuel combustion. Gasoline and diesel are hydrocarbon fuels. During combustion, hydrogen from the fuel combines with oxygen and forms water, which initially travels through the exhaust largely as water vapor. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency explicitly describes water as a product of gasoline combustion.
The exhaust system does not become hot everywhere at the instant the engine starts. When hot exhaust containing water vapor meets cooler pipes and mufflers, some of that vapor can condense back into liquid. Manufacturer technical information documents condensate collecting inside exhaust systems and, on some designs, being drained through dedicated openings. That is why clear water can drip from a perfectly serviceable vehicle, particularly around cold starts, cool weather, idling and short-trip operation.
The useful distinction is not 'water versus no water.' It is normal condensation versus a second set of symptoms. Is it normal for water to come out of a car exhaust?
